Underground architecture at CONCRETA 2006…

A series of conferences brings together 12 addresses by renowned figures in contemporary Portuguese architecture. Results of the Casa do Futuro, House of the Future, (InovaDomus) are announced during the exhibition.

Eduardo Souto de Moura, Carrilho da Graça, Aires Mateus, João Mendes Ribeiro, Graça Dias, Manuel Maria Reis, António Portugal, Inês Lobo, Pedro Domingues, Nuno Brandão and the design offices ARX Portugal, Menos é Mais, Promontório and Cannatà & Fernandes Arquitectos are the interventions expected for the series of conferences entitled “Architecture Made in Portugal” which will take place at EXPONOR’s Conference Centre, under the auspices of CONCRETA 2006 – 22nd International Exhibition for the Construction Industry, between the 24th and the 28th of October.
Alongside the dozen talks there will be another book publication, also commissioned by the architects Fátima Fernandes and Michele Cannatá and sponsored by CONCRETA, entitled “Architectura do Metro – obras e projectos na área metropolitana do Porto”. The theme aims to draw attention to the problems of urban quality and, in particular, to the importance of architecture in producing infrastructures on a territory-wide scale.
In the words of Michele Cannatà, the event aims to “provide a space to reflect on the state of a cultural sector which represents one of the most important productive areas of the Country, one which has gradually acquired greater recognition in national and international disciplinary circuits”. But he adds that it is also “a reflection of the international state of Portuguese architecture”.
CONCRETA’s 22nd edition will focus on the evolution that the construction market must inevitably undergo, and the way in which this will be reflected in materials, processes, behaviours and synergies.
For many years the exhibition has been a vehicle for conveying knowledge and sharing experiences, with the aim of improving the technique and the art of constructing and of applying the many different materials, in their various combinations, in order to stimulate the sector’s development.
Exhibition unveils the Casa do Futuro (House of the Future)
Once again, the exhibition offers a diverse collection of parallel activities (details of which will be announced soon). In addition to architecture, the spotlight will also focus on engineering, sustainability and certification, safety, ecomaterials and domotics, and other areas of interest.
And so. for example, we have the partnership with AveiroDomus - Association for the Development of the House of the Future, following on from InovaDomus - the Project for the House of the Future. Goals: to promote and publicise conceptual, scientific and technological innovation, related to the development of new products and processes in the area of housing in the future (in partnership with IAPMEI, with funding by PRIME).
During CONCRETA, and in association with the Portuguese Entrepreneurial Association, the House of the Future will be presented in a seminar publicising the results achieved a year after the project was begun. The initiative will focus on the dynamisation of inter-company cooperation networks and related competitive advantages. Essentially, this is a way to tell people about the project’s evolution and further stimulate the interest of the public and entrepreneurial entities in the sector to participate in, and become part of the network.
AveiroDomus is a not-for-profit body, made up of a group of companies with different, but equally relevant, interests in the meta-sector of housing, and the University of Aveiro. Its aim is to promote and publicise conceptual, scientific and technological innovation, related to the development of new products and processes in the area of housing.
InovaDomus® - Project for the House of the Future seeks to create the conditions for the companies and the University to jointly develop innovative and futuristic products and solutions which will lead to the preparation of the “Specifications” for the construction of the first version of the House of the Future, guaranteeing an increase in competition - due to the conceptual and technological development - for the companies involved and the meta-sector of housing in general.
This project will be followed by another stage whose objective it will be to construct the House itself, an evolutive and versatile house, adapted to constant upgrading and modernisation, with high levels of comfort and safety for any resident.
The sharing and dissemination of good practices, in the field of innovation, conception of new products and new concepts of technological development, of relations and cooperation between companies and the science and technology system, not only bring added value to the entrepreneurial fabric, facilitating the process of innovation and promoting its competitive capacity, but they are also one of the key aspects of the Project, which was launched about a year ago.
