International Meeting Place for the Optical Technologies

The tension is mounting. Two months before the trade fair opens its doors, the anticipated highlights are beginning to take definite shape. The 8th OPTATEC at the Frankfurt Exhibition Centre will not only once again serve as a showcase for products and a platform for the exchange of information and collaboration in the fields of optical technology and photonics in Germany from the 20th through the 23rd of June, 2006, it will demonstrate increased international participation as well. For the first time ever, the number of exhibitors from the Far East exceeds the number of North American participants, and a third of all exhibitors come from outside of Germany. As compared with OPTATEC 2004, exhibition floor space has grown by 15% to date.

Give and Take According to Spectaris, German Industry Association for Optical, Medical and Mechatronic Technologies, nearly half of the products from the field of optical technologies exported by Germany go to other countries in the European Union, followed by the USA, Japan, and since 2002 China. However, most of the importing countries are also active as competent manufacturers in the same industry: Thus a 71% increase in the export of lasers was contrasted by 91% growth in imports. Giving and taking, observing and exhibiting, learning and disseminating information set the mood of a good trade fair. Correspondingly, this year’s OPTATEC is focused on propagating information and establishing contacts. For example, Spectaris will hold an investor-analyst conference which will provide companies with the opportunity of presenting their objectives with regard to the photonics market to interested investors. The European Arca Nova project is committed to the development of new business relationships amongst companies from EU member countries, and will organise collaboration meetings for these companies – including interpreters – and provide them with the opportunity of presenting their profiles in a special catalogue on the Internet.
Exhibitors Inform The exhibitors themselves will rise to speak on all four days of the trade fair at the exhibitor forum. Speakers from companies and R&D institutes will hold roughly 30 German or English presentations regarding processes, trends and recommendations for product use covering all aspects of optical technology (see agenda at www.schall-optatec.com). A series of talks will deal with optical materials and their processing, and others will be dedicated to optical metrology and components such as LEDs, fibre lasers and UV optics. It is precisely this type of first-hand information with opportunities for discussion which make a visit to the trade fair highly efficient. Special Automotive Show As has been the case in the past, a special show will be offered this year as well, which will focus on the topic of “Optical Technologies for Automobile Manufacturing”. Leading companies from the automotive industry like Edmund Optics GmbH, Laser Components GmbH, PerkinElmer Elcos GmbH and others, who are mentioned on the OPTATEC Website, will be on hand. Carl Zeiss Research Prize Finally, presentation of the renowned Carl Zeiss Research Prize which is awarded once every two years – primarily to younger scientists – will be a festive highlight. OPTATEC will provide the backdrop for this award for the first time. Virtual Trade Fair On the occasion of this year’s event, P.E. Schall GmbH is providing OPTATEC exhibitors with the opportunity of additionally presenting their companies at the virtual trade fair (www.schall-virtuell.de). Visitors will thus be able to prepare themselves for the event with the help of product information, product presentations and direct lines of communication to their contact persons in the field of optical technologies without any undue time pressure.
